PHANTOM MANDARIN SCREENPLAY SYNOPSIS
A most bizarre and mysterious event ends the life of an American patriot, John M. Birch, whose actions put him in league with such American heroes as Audie Murphy and Sergeant York.
Led in 1940 to serve the Chinese people by bringing them the gospel, twenty-two year old missionary John M. Birch finds himself in a country ravaged by Japanese invaders and the vicious cadres of Mao Tse Tung. Neither group cares for Christianity or its missionaries and each back up its hatred with bullets. It takes the courage of Daniel and the patience of Job to travel the country seeking those who would hear his message and Birch has just these qualities.
Though Caucasian with a Georgia drawl, Birch cleverly disguises himself and manages to pass as a Chinese. He does it by dyeing his hair black and dressing in peasant clothes, as well as using his fluency in the language and understanding of Chinese ways. Because of this ability to blend in and avoid capture, the Japanese nickname him the “Phantom Mandarin”.
He is able to use this skill to rescue Col. Jimmy Doolittle and his Tokyo Raiders crew from their downed B25 bomber behind enemy lines. He becomes the “eyes and ears” of the Flying Tigers Air Force by training Chinese to spy out Japanese movements and radio the information to U.S./Chinese intelligence. Of course, when he smuggles radio parts into a town held by the Japanese, he packs a Bible to pass along to his contact. His faith in God and dedication to his country and Chinese people keep him willing to risk his life in mission after mission behind enemy lines.
As the war draws to a close he has two goals. One, to marry the nurse he has come to know and to love in his severe bouts of malaria. The other, to convince the U.S. to keep its military presence in China and turn its might against the communists. What he has learned about the violent methods of the Chinese Communists against their own people has convinced him that they are a foe more deadly to the security of the world than Imperial Japan or Nazi Germany could ever have been.
When the war is over he has one final mission to perform. When it leads to his capture by the communists, he gives up one goal and embraces the opportunity to use the loss of his own life as the catalyst for a U.S. fight against communism. Instead of submitting meekly to his captors, he instigates a scuffle.
At the age of twenty-seven John Birch dies from a single shot to the back of his head. An epic story of faith, courage, tragedy and betrayal. Phantom Mandarin...the true story of John Birch.
